Peter Murphy had been tasked with winning promotion to Scotland's second tier

Queen of the South have decided to part company with manager Peter Murphy after their failure to win promotion to the Scottish Championship.

The Dumfries side were beaten in Saturday's play-off semi-final following a penalty shoot-out after a 3-3 draw on aggregate with part-time Stenhousemuir, who finished second behind Inverness Caledonian Thistle.

Until the spot-kicks, Queens had finished the season unbeaten in 11 games, but it was only good enough to finish third, 13 points behind Gary Naysmith's side.

But chairman Billy Hewitson told his club website: "Football is a results business and financially we need to be in the Championship.
