Sir David Attenborough, a world-renowned naturalist and documentarian, celebrated his 100th birthday on Friday, May 8.

Known around the globe for his patient demeanor and smooth narration, Attenborough carved out a place as one of the most highly regarded conservationists.

"I had rather thought that I would celebrate my 100th birthday quietly, but it seems that many of you have had other ideas," Attenborough said in a video message shared on May 7. "I've been completely overwhelmed by birthday greetings from preschool groups to care home residents and countless individuals and families of all ages."

Numerous public officials and celebrities wished Attenborough a happy birthday ahead of the weekend, including King Charles and Queen Camilla, Leonardo DiCaprio and David Beckham.

"For as long as I can remember, Sir David has opened windows into the natural world, bringing moments of wonder, beauty, and discovery into homes across the globe and inspiring generations to fall in love with life on Earth. Through his voice, many of us first came to witness the astonishing richness of biodiversity − and to understand both its fragility and its resilience," DiCaprio wrote in an Instagram post on May 8.
