A 69-year-old man was duped of ₹42,000 after a stranger allegedly swapped his ATM card for a dummy card at a kiosk in Perambur on Wednesday morning.
The incident took place when the victim, Rajendran, a retired CMDA employee of Perambur, visited an ATM on Paper Mills Road to withdraw cash. According to the police, an unidentified man inside the kiosk offered him assistance to operate the machine.
The suspect allegedly said the transaction had failed and returned the ATM card to Rajendran before leaving the premises. Rajendran returned home unaware that the suspect had taken his original card.
A few minutes later, he received mobile phone alerts indicating that ₹42,000 had been withdrawn from his bank account through four separate transactions.
On verifying the card, he discovered that it was fake and that his card had been stolen.
