A total of 350 surveillance cameras in the R.S. Puram areas in Coimbatore have been connected to the control room of the city police with the support of cable TV operators.
The city police stated that these cameras have been connected using cables and will work without the use of the internet. Visuals from the camera networks can be seen from the city police control room.
City Police Commissioner N. Kannan launched the new arrangement, which was implemented with the financial support of a private firm.
According to the police, the camera network will help in prevention and detection of crime, besides ensuring safety for the public, including women and children.
The police stated efforts will be taken to connect cameras located in important locations, places of public gathering and protest venues to the control room in near future. This will strengthen the security apparatus of the city, bringing more places under direct watch of the police.
