A French village was in shock on Thursday, May 7, after a 14-year-old girl was stabbed to death on her way to school the previous day. The teen was found gravely wounded on Wednesday morning in a street in Fère-en-Tardenois in northeastern France, the local prosecutor's office said.

She died of multiple stab wounds to the neck before the rescue services arrived. An unemployed 23-year-old living with his parents was arrested on Wednesday evening. The prosecutor's office said he could be an ex-boyfriend.

A murder investigation was opened, the prosecutor's office said. Numerous inquiries "are currently underway," including "interviews with the girl's family and friends" and "potential witnesses," it said.

White roses and candles were laid in front of the entrance to the victim's middle school on Thursday morning.
