Notre Dame football coach Marcus Freeman nearly appeared on NBC's "Saturday Night Live" this season, but comedian Shane Gillis said the plan was canceled after former Michigan coach Sherrone Moore was fired and arrested in the same week.

Gillis, a Notre Dame superfan who has been at numerous Fighting Irish events in recent years, shared the news on the "Bussin' With The Boys" podcast alongside Taylor Lewan and Will Compton on Tuesday, May 5.

“I tried to get him on SNL this year,” Gillis said while wearing a Notre Dame hat. “And it was close. We were close to getting it done. I was talking to Lorne (Michaels) about it, and we were close. We were going to have him on Weekend Update, and then something happened at the Michigan program that became the biggest story in college football, and not Notre Dame, so we couldn’t do it. For real. It was that week.”

Michigan fired Moore after his second season as head coach after an investigation found credible evidence of him having an inappropriate relationship with a staff member. After being fired, Moore allegedly broke into the home of the staff member, who later came forward in an interview with "Good Morning America."
