New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani criticized the response of federal immigration enforcement in Bushwick this weekend after U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents brought a detainee to a local hospital, leading to large protests outside.
The mayor clarified that New York Police Department officers were not there to assist ICE agents but instead were responding to protests outside the Wyckoff Heights Medical Center on Saturday night.
Here's what to know about the incident, and if NYC agencies are allowed to assist ICE officers.
Chidozie Wilson Okeke, a Nigerian citizen who allegedly had overstayed his tourist visa, was arrested by ICE Saturday, according to Gothamist. He then requested medical attention and was brought to the hospital, where protestors began to gather outside.
Video and photos depict strong tensions as protestors, NYPD officers and ICE agents were all present.
