Tasked with delivering a package for Mikey’s uncle Jimmy (Oliver Platt), the journey doubles as a deep dive into the pair’s complicated friendship.Set before the events of Season 1, the flashback episode isn’t as anxiety-fueled as the show usually is, but it’s just as intense in its exploration of Richie and Mikey’s relationship prior to the latter’s suicide.Per usual, we see the two trade playful insults like brothers. They do drugs and banter with teens during a pickup basketball game, and later hit a bar Richie insists on visiting — even though he promised his then-girlfriend Tiff (Gillian Jacobs) he’d be home in time for their daughter’s birth. Instead, the father-to-be entertains the bar crowd with embarrassing stories of himself, while Mikey shares an emotional moment with a stranger (Marin Ireland) in the bathroom. The tension ultimately boils over when Mikey’s teasing toward Richie turns brutal, as he declares in front of the whole bar what a terrible father his friend is going to be: “If he is involved, he’s going to fuck it up.”Whether that’s the drugs or Mikey’s unresolved childhood trauma talking, the pair’s confrontation turns physical (Mikey even spits in Richie’s face). Still, they finish their errand for Jimmy and head back home to Chicago. But just when it seems the episode will end on their awkward drive home, the final scene shifts to show Richie alone behind the wheel, staring at the empty passenger seat, clearly grieving the loss of his dear friend. As he pulls forward, a van slams into his car, cutting to right to the credits. It’s unclear where this crash fits within the show’s timeline or what it means for the final season, but based on the series’ history, it likely hints at something pivotal ahead. The accident could potentially change Richie’s partnership with Syd (Ayo Edebiri) at the restaurant, especially with Carmy (Jeremy Allen White) finally stepping away. Or it may hint at more revelations surrounding Mikey’s death. Either way, we’re in for quite a ride as “The Bear” closes up shop for good this summer.“The Bear” returns for Season 5 in June. In the meantime, stream "Gary" on Hulu now.See All UpdatesClose
