The Andhra Pradesh government has sanctioned ₹369.20 crore for the modernisation of the Guntur channel, clearing a long-pending irrigation proposal for the district. The project, proposed by Union Minister of State for Rural Development Pemmasani Chandra Sekhar, was approved on Monday (May 4, 2026) through G.O. Rt. No. 217.

The order has been issued by Chief Secretary G. Sai Prasad, who is also heading the Water Resources department as Special Chief Secretary (FAC).

Mr. Chandra Sekhar said the project would stabilise irrigation for more than 33,000 acres and benefit 33 villages, covering more than four lakh people. The works will cover the main canal and distributaries from 0 to 47 km, as part of the Krishna delta system. Farmers in the region welcomed the move, saying improved water availability could help agriculture and drinking water supply.

The fresh sanction comes nearly a year after the Centre approved ₹363.23 crore under the Atal Mission for Rejuvenation and Urban Transformation 2.0 (AMRUT 2.0) scheme in May 2025 for a dedicated drinking water pipeline to the Gorantla area and other layouts in Guntur city, a project also pushed by Mr. Chandra Sekhar.
