Scenes of grief unfolded outside hospitals and homes in east Delhi as news spread of nine members from three families being charred to death in a massive blaze in Shahdara’s upscale Vivek Vihar on Sunday.

Relatives and friends from across the city and neighbouring States rushed to Guru Teg Bahadur Hospital to claim the bodies of their loved ones.

According to the police and Delhi Fire Services, the first call was received at 3.47 a.m. about a fire in a residential building.

Fire tenders and police teams rushed to the spot, carrying out search-and-rescue and firefighting operations.

The four-storey building had at least two flats on each floor. While families living on the front side were rescued and taken to the hospital, those at the rear were trapped behind iron grilles that rescuers had to cut through, delaying evacuation, officials said.
