The police have registered a case against nine people on the charge of imposing a social boycott on a family in Kondaskoppa village of Belagavi district.

Following a complaint by Renuka Sambrekar to the Hirebagewadi Police, officers registered a First Information Report naming nine people.

The complaint says that Mallappa Sambrekar, Vitthal Sambrekar, Baganna Sambrekar, Ramesh Sambrekar, Malinga Sambrekar, Gangappa Sambrekar, Vaiju Sambrekar, Piraji Sambrekar and Yallappa Sambrekar announced and enforced a social boycott against Renuka Sambrekar’s family.

Renuka’s husband Narasoba Sambrekar, one of the priests of the Sri Beereshwar temple in the village, had differences with the other priests who are his relatives over taking turns to worship the deity.

Anyone who spoke to anyone in the family, including small children, would have to pay a fine of ₹5,000 to the Panch Mandali of the village, an informal set-up of community leaders. The complaint was filed on April 6.
