The General Education department in Kerala didn’t conduct the general transfer of principals in government higher secondary schools (HSS) in the 2025-26 academic year.

According to functionaries of the Kerala Higher Secondary School Principals’ Association (KHSPA), the applications for the purpose are generally called for between March and April and the process is supposed to get over by June-July. This, however, gets delayed quite often. In the 2024-25 academic year, the applications were invited in 2024 October and the process was over only by December.

N. Sakkeer Sainudheen, president of the association, says that even applications were not called for for transfer last year. The department had claimed that it was planning to conduct the transfer through online mode. However, the framing of the rules got delayed. “After teachers’ unions exerted pressure, the rules were framed in November. However, we have not got any copy yet,” Mr. Sainudheen adds.

Meanwhile, the officials got busy with the preparations for the local body polls scheduled in December. The process was delayed further. Mr. Sainudheen claims that a large number of higher secondary school principals in districts such as Kasaragod wish to shift to their hometown or nearby places. Also, many are facing family issues or health problems. Those who retired this year were denied the chance to end their career in schools back home, Mr. Sainudheen says.
