Oregon police said a person died after a car crashed into a prominent Portland athletic club and caught fire early May 2.
"Evidence of an explosive device was found in the vehicle," a Portland Police Bureau news release said. The police explosives disposal unit responded to the scene.
At 2:49 a.m., Portland Fire & Rescue officials responded to a report of a vehicle crashing into the front entrance of Multnomah Athletic Club, near downtown Portland, and catching fire, the police news release said. After controlling the fire, officials said they found one person dead inside the car.
Officials closed several streets around the Multnomah Athletic Club, and police asked people to avoid the area.
Immediate details on the person or the motive weren’t clear. In response to emailed questions, a police spokesperson said a news conference was scheduled in the afternoon.
