Neeraj Lal, a principal investigator at Monell Chemical Senses Center and the Department of Neuroscience, University of Pennsylvania, and an alumnus of Genetic Engineering at the SRM Institute of Science and Technology, has been selected for the Searle Scholars Programme 2026.A press release from the SRMIST said Dr. Lals’ research studied the mechanisms underlying extreme physiological adaptations in hibernating Arctic ground squirrels, seeking to unlock critical biological insights that could help find innovative treatments for metabolic and cardiovascular diseases.He will receive a funding of $450,000 over a period of three years. He is one of the 15 scientists selected this year from 207 applicants representing 141 global institutions.The Searle Scholars Programme supports outstanding young faculty in chemistry and biomedical sciences, who have launched independent research careers, the release added.
