The Supreme Court has scheduled an open court hearing of petitions seeking a review of the apex court judgment of September 1, 2025 requiring in-service teachers of Classes 1 to 8 in non-minority schools across the country to clear the Teachers’ Eligibility Test (TET) in two years or be “compulsorily retired”.

A Bench of Justices Dipankar Datta and Manmohan scheduled the hearing of the review petitions for May 13. Currently, 45 review petitions are part of this consolidated case. Some of the first States to file review petitions in the case include Uttar Pradesh and Tamil Nadu.

Several interlocutory applications had also been filed in this case by various stakeholders, including the Deseeya Adhyapaka Parishad (NTU Kerala), represented by advocate Tomy Chacko, which had urged the apex court for an open court hearing to ensure that the grievances of thousands of teachers could be presented orally.

The Bench had taken up the case in chambers on April 28, but decided to hear oral arguments in open court. Review petitions are usually heard by circulation in the chambers of the judges. The same Bench which pronounced the original judgment decides the review petitions. The review of a Supreme Court judgment is considered a rare relief.
