The Census 2027 exercise in Maharashtra will offer a self-enumeration option through a web portal from May 1 to May 15, Chief Principal Census Officer Nirupama J. Dange said at a press conference in Mumbai on Thursday.
She clarified that the facility is optional. Households that do not opt for self-enumeration will be covered by enumerators, who will visit every household between May 16 and June 14.
The self-enumeration portal, developed by the Office of the Registrar General and Census Commissioner, can be accessed through the official website. A member of the household may fill in the census schedule online; the process is expected to take about 15 to 20 minutes. No documents are required to be uploaded. Upon submission, a self-enumeration identification number (SE ID) will be generated and sent to the registered mobile number or e-mail address.
Ms. Dange said individuals who complete self-enumeration must share their SE ID with the enumerator during the house-listing and housing census phase. The enumerator will verify, confirm and finalise the submitted data. The first phase of enumeration will be conducted from May 16 to June 14, 2026.
Officials of the Directorate of Census Operations, Maharashtra, said the self-enumeration portal would remain active only during the 15-day window beginning May 1. Data submitted through the portal will be encrypted and stored on government servers.
