In separate incidents, 13 fishermen from Nagapattinam district were assaulted mid-sea, allegedly by Sri Lankan Tamil fishermen, and robbed of their catch and their belongings on Sunday night (April 26, 2026).
Sri Lankan nabbed
One of the suspected Sri Lankan Tamils — identified as Ayanthan, 27, of Kankesanthurai — was nabbed by some fishermen and brought ashore on Monday morning (April 27, 2026) . He was handed over to the Department of Fisheries.
Police sources said the Sri Lankan fisherman was captured by five fishermen of Serudhur, who put out to sea on a registered fibre boat on Saturday afternoon (April 25, 2026).
They were fishing nine nautical miles south-east of Arcottuthurai when they were intercepted by three suspected Sri Lankans, who came in a speed boat and tried to cut their nets.
