A special court of the National Investigation Agency (NIA) has convicted and sentenced Mohammed Shariq, an alleged operative linked to the Islamic State (IS), to 10 years rigorous imprisonment in connection with the 2022 Mangaluru pressure cooker blast case.
The court also imposed a fine of about ₹92,000 under the provisions of the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA) and relevant sections of the IPC.
Blast during transit
The incident occurred on November 19, 2022, at Nagori in Mangaluru, when a low-intensity improvised explosive device (IED) concealed in a pressure cooker exploded while Shariq was transporting it in an autorickshaw. Both Shariq and the driver sustained injuries.
Investigations revealed that the accused had planned to plant the IED at the Kadri Manjunatha Temple, but the device detonated prematurely.
