In a significant judgment, the Kozhikode Motor Accidents Claims Tribunal (MACT) Principal Bench has awarded ₹9.01 crore as compensation to the family of a person who died in a road accident.
Shijin, a native of Thiruvangoor who worked in the UAE, died after being hit by a lorry, allegedly driven rashly and negligently, at Malikkadavu around 1 a.m. on March 28, 2023.
MACT Principal Judge K. Rakesh delivered the judgment on a compensation petition filed by Shijin’s wife, Nikhila Karunakaran, their children Ishan and Parthiv, and his mother Radha.
The petitioners had approached the tribunal seeking compensation following the incident. In the case filed in 2023, the tribunal, on April 25, 2026, directed the New India Insurance Company to pay ₹9,01,67,500 as compensation. The verdict is considered significant and is reportedly among the highest compensation amounts awarded by tribunals in Kerala.
Shijin was working as a senior operator at Abu Dhabi Polymers and had come home on leave when the accident occurred.
