Stick out
I’m not a big fan of generative AI, and I wince in distaste whenever it’s unnecessarily inserted into products. My disdain for the technology makes my enjoyment of this kids’ thermal sticker printer particularly unusual: part of me wanted to hate it, but it’s too beautifully conceived for me to muster up any fury. Mostly, it just made me laugh.
Your child’s experience of using it will be thus: think of a thing you’d like to see on a sticker, hold down the big white button, say the thing, release the button and wait. While it’s processing your prompt, it plays a little arpeggiated tune that conveys the idea that it’s “thinking”. A few seconds later, your requested image, rendered as a black-and-white cartoon sketch, appears on its 4in screen and simultaneously pops out of the top on a square of tear-off sticker paper. A dolphin wearing sunglasses? Sure. Arnold Schwarzenegger enjoying a cheese board? No problem. There’s a consistency of style in the images, and they’re great for colouring in (a pack of coloured pencils is included).
