When six schools in Tiruvallur were identified as model polling booths in the recently concluded election to the State Assembly, the district administration chose to spend a little more on the paint. It used Khadi Prakritik paint, an eco-friendly coating that also keeps the classrooms cool.
The classrooms were painted green with this non-toxic paint, which comprises sustainable ingredients.
It has an anti-fungal formula that ensures longevity, while being safe for both children and pets, an official said.
Around 20 litres of paint, costing ₹7,000, was used for each 70-sq.m booth.
Six constituencies — Avadi, Ponneri, Tiruttani, Tiruvallur, Maduravoyal, and Poonamallee — got 10 green polling booths, whose roofs were cool coated to reduce the heat inside.
