From May 11, 2026, numbers prefixed with ‘Cn’ (standing for Census) will be written on the walls of all houses and buildings in Telangana as part of the Census 2027 process, incidentally the first to be conducted after the formation of the State. This will be followed by House Listing and Housing Census (HLO) by enumerators — who will visit door-to-door to carry out the Census process from May 11 to June 9. It is during this process the numbers will be written on the walls. This is the first census to include the self-enumeration process, Director of the Census Operations in Telangana Bharati Hollikeri said, adding that the self-numeration is optional, but saves time for both the respondents and enumerators. People have to answer 33 questions in the Phase-I, which are already notified. Caste will be enumerated in Phase-II — to be conducted across the nation from February 9, 2027 to February 28, 2027.Telangana’s Director of Census Operations answers some common queries in an interview to The Hindu.

Should people keep any documents or address proof ready when an enumerator visits their home?

During Census enumeration, we will not ask for any kind of proof or documents. We have already publicised, through notification by the Government of India and Government of Telangana, all 33 questions. If people are aware of 33 questions, they can keep details ready. That would save some time. But we will not ask for any proof or documents.
