It is a mixed picture about healthcare in Telangana that emerges from the "National Sample Survey’s 80th Round Report on Household Social Consumption: Health" released recently. The average medical expenditure per hospitalisation case (excluding childbirth) (as in-patient) in Telangana is among the highest in the country at ₹52,743, topped only by Chandigarh where it is ₹80,478. The national average is comparatively lower at ₹37,858.
The high expense of hospitalisation cost is linked to treatment at private hospitals (in urban and rural) which averages ₹72,561. For Tamil Nadu, the treatment at private hospitals in urban areas is higher at ₹80,923. However, the cost drops to ₹5,856 at Telangana government hospitals in urban areas, while it drops to ₹1,364 in Tamil Nadu.
However, the ante-natal and post-natal medicare cost in Telangana is ₹3,022, lower than the national average of ₹3,803. In Bihar It is ₹3,546 in Bihar and ₹3,417 in Uttar Pradesh.
The survey included 4,504 households in Telangana and the sample size was 17,233 persons in rural as well as urban areas in Telangana. Nationally, the survey period was from January to December 2025 and a random sample of 1,39,732 households spread over rural (76,296) and urban (63,436) areas were selected.
