The Houston Police Department is facing pressure to fire one of its officers after a viral social media video of her using racist slurs surfaced this week.
In the video posted to Instagram, a woman, now identified as officer Ashley Gonzalez, can be seen talking while using derogatory comments about Black people and repeatedly using racial slurs.
A Houston PD spokesperson told Houston Public Media that Gonzalez has been suspended with pay and that the incident is under investigation.
The incident has gained attendtion local and national attention, with Houston City Council member Edward Pollard calling for Gonzalez's firing in a social media post.
"I support our department, but incidents like this make it significantly more difficult to build and maintain trust with the people they serve," Pollard said. "This type of conduct is unacceptable and cannot be overlooked or tolerated."
