Maharashtra Cabinet Minister Mangal Prabhat Lodha has written a letter to the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation for the name change of King Edward Memorial (KEM) Hospital to ‘Kaushalya Eklavya Memorial Hospital’.

In a letter dated March 25, he addressed to the Health Committee Chairman, Harish Bhandirge, stating that as our country moves towards re-establishing and glorifying its rich indigenous heritage under the influence of the inspiring concept of ‘Swadeshi’, it is our collective duty to reconsider the names of public institutions.

“Many institutions still use colonial-era names, which are reminiscent of the days of slavery. These names should be replaced with names that honour our own culture, values and inspiring historical figures. In this regard, if the institution in Mumbai, KEM Hospital, is renamed, the name chosen from Indian history and culture will inspire future generations.

The letter mentioned that KEM Hospital should be renamed as Kaushalya Shreshtha Eklavya Memorial Hospital.

Opposition Leader Kishori Pednekar said that Mr. Lodha’s demand is “silly”.
