Sen. Chris Murphy had to turn a post critical of President Donald Trump’s handling of the Iran war into a teachable moment after many MAGA members didn’t seem to get the sarcasm.
On Monday, the Connecticut Democrat responded to a post noting that more than two dozen Iranian shadow fleet vessels had managed to bypass a U.S. blockade with just one word: “awesome.”
Although Murphy might have assumed that people would understand the post was sarcastic by its use of lower-case letters and no punctuation, many MAGA types either didn’t understand his point or purposely chose to pretend they didn’t.
The clapback against Murphy was loud enough that the senator attempted to school his critics on the intended tone of the post:
Ok Twitter, I can’t believe I need to clarify this but obviously Trump’s bungled mismanagement of this war is not “awesome”. As I have said a million times here, it’s a disaster and he should end the war immediately. My tweet was something called “sarcasm”.
