Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) leader Iltija Mufti on Tuesday (April 21, 2026) described cow vigilantes active in Jammu and Kashmir as “terrorists” and sought justice for the family of an 18-year-old youth from Ramban, who was allegedly targeted on the Jammu-Ramban highway when he was ferrying cattle.
“The incident has raised serious concerns, with allegations that he was targeted by so-called cow vigilantes. These vigilantes are terrorists, who harass Muslims. The police must take strict action against those involved,” said Ms. Mufti, who visited the family in Ramban.
Tanveer Ahmad Chopan, a resident of Pogal, was allegedly chased and attacked by car-borne cow vigilantes on the Jammu-Ramban national highway on April 12. The victim was ferrying a milch cow and two calves from Jammu at the time of incident and allegedly jumped into Nallah Bishlari to escape the attack. Four accused have been arrested so far.
“The body of the victim should be traced and returned to the family. The incident needs a thorough probe,” said Ms. Mufti.
