he layoffs have been spectacular. Since December 2025, nearly 1,000 jobs have been cut in French print media, according to figures compiled by Le Monde, with around 10,500 positions lost since 2009. The phenomenon has been especially pronounced in the regional daily press. Across the country, restructuring has increased, to the detriment of local news coverage, which has shrunk dramatically.

France's print media in crisis amid massive layoffs

There are two main ways to analyze this crisis. From an economic perspective, the squeeze is relentless. Declining revenue from print subscriptions can no longer fund the essential investments needed for digital transformation. At the same time, internet platforms are attracting audiences and draining advertising revenue. But the closure of a local newsroom in central Creuse or eastern Doubs is not just a question of accounting or jobs. It is also about democracy.
