Water Minister Parvesh Sahib Singh has directed the installation of rainwater harvesting systems in all government buildings and warned that failure to comply would result in water connections being disconnected, according to a statement issued by his office on Monday.

The move comes after the Minister chaired a meeting at the Delhi Secretariat earlier in the day, bringing together officials from over 60 departments of the Delhi and Central governments.

‘Will invite strict action’

“Rainwater harvesting in government establishments must be implemented in a serious and time-bound manner. Failure to comply will invite strict action — an initial 10% cut will be imposed (stoppage of 10% incentive on water bills), and if lapses continue, the water connection will be disconnected. The move will ensure accountability and fulfil our collective duty to secure the city’s water future,” the statement read.

The Delhi Jal Board (DJB) will play a central role in implementing the directive and monitoring progress, it stated.
