The District and Sessions Court in central Assam’s Nagaon on Monday (April 20, 2026) convicted 20 people in connection with the mob lynching of two Guwahati-based youth in Karbi Anglong district almost eight years ago.
The judge, D. Mahanta, acquitted 25 other accused for a lack of sufficient evidence.
Abhijit Nath and Nilotpal Das died after 150-200 villagers assaulted them at Panjuri Kachari Gaon Tiniali under the Dokmoka police station in Karbi Anglong. The duo was returning from the Kangthilangshu waterfalls, which they visited as part of their environmental study.
According to the prosecution, Nath and Das were attacked on suspicion of being child lifters, a rumour widely circulated on social media at the time. Despite identifying themselves and pleading for their lives, they were assaulted in public view.
Videos of the incident, posted on social media platforms, sparked widespread outrage across Assam.
