A court in Nashik has sent Ashok Kharat to police remand for five days in a fifth case of sexual assault and cheating. The police had sought custody for further investigation.
A holiday court in Nashik on Sunday (April 20, 2026) remanded Ashok Kharat, an accused in multiple cases of sexual assault and cheating, to police custody till April 23. This is the fifth case registered against him.
Mr. Kharat was arrested on March 18 after a 35-year-old woman filed a rape complaint at the Sarkarwada police station. He has since been accused of sexually assaulting several women and cheating them by claiming to have supernatural powers and knowledge of black magic.
The police formally arrested Mr. Kharat on Saturday (April 18, 2026) in the fifth case. In this case, he is accused of cheating the victim by using black magic and presenting himself as an incarnation of a deity. He was produced before the court through video conferencing on Sunday, where the police sought five days of custody.
The government lawyers Shailendra Bagade and Suhas Bendbhar argued that the crimes required investigation and that each case needed to be examined separately. They told the court that a detailed probe was necessary.
