Several people sustained minor injuries when Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) workers clashed with the police at Nettayam under Vattiyurkavu police station limits late on Sunday.
The police attributed the violence to a complaint filed by a BJP worker. The complainant alleged that his neighbour, allegedly a Communist Party of India (Marxist) [CPI(M)] worker, conducted himself in a way that outraged the modesty of his wife.
The police intervened after local CPI(M) workers challenged the BJP activist’s accusation, leading to a tense standoff on the road.
According to the police, BJP workers targeted a police patrol party, which reached the spot, leading to a baton charge.
Later, the BJP workers marched to the Vattiyoorkavu station, accusing the police of siding with the CPI(M) activists. They also turned their ire against a television channel’s media personnel reporting the late-night violence.
