Eight children were killed what police believe was a domestic shooting in northwest Louisiana on April 19, according to local authorities.

The incident occurred early in the morning of April 19 just after 6 a.m. local time in Shreveport, Louisiana, Christopher Bordelon with the Shreveport Police Department said in a news conference. Police responded to the shooting which left 10 total people struck by gunfire, and the ages of the eight children who were killed ranged from 1 to 14 years old.

Police said the "individual responsible" for the shooting allegedly carjacked a vehicle following the incident and was chased by police into an area in Bossier Parish, where officers fatally shot the suspect.

Bordelon said police believe the suspect was the sole person to fire shots during the incident, which he described as a "domestic disturbance."

Police have not publicly identified the suspect or the victims.
