Educationist and progressive thinker Shabbir Mustafa has urged the Karnataka’s Education Department to immediately clarify the confusion over grading and marks for third language exams in schools.
In a statement in Mysuru, Mr. Mustafa, who is also a member of the University of Mysore’s Syndicate, said lack of clarity during the ongoing academic year’s examination period whether the third language subjects should be evaluated through grades or marks has created confusion and pushed lakhs of students into mental stress and uncertainty.

“This irresponsible approach of the Education Department has become a matter of serious concern. Just two days before the third language examination, the government decided to introduce grading for the SSLC annual examination. As a result, students did not take the exam seriously”, he said.
However, the Karnataka School Examination and Assessment Board, which conducts the SSLC examination, is required to award marks instead of grades for third language subjects including Hindi as per the High Court proceedings.
