Daily electricity consumption and peak demand records for Kerala were reset yet again on Saturday (April 18, 2026). Daily consumption stood at 117.15 million units (mu) and peak demand, 6,033 megawatts (MW).
The previous all-time highs for Kerala were 116.11 mu and 6,013 MW respectively, recorded on Friday (April 17).
Electricity Minister K. Krishnankutty said on Sunday (April 19, 2026) that the State is facing an additional demand of about 50 MW daily due to the dependence on air-conditioners and fans in a big way to beat the rise in summer temperatures.
He urged the public to reduce the use of high-voltage appliances during the peak hours from 6 p.m. to 11 p.m. Kerala is also expected to face a shortage of 200 MW from April 20 and another 200 MW from April 26 on account of power banking arrangements made with other States, the Minister said. It is expected that the high summer temperatures would persist for nearly one week into May, he said.
