BJP State president N. Ramchander Rao on Saturday slammed the Congress for opposing the implementation of women’s reservation in legislatures, a proposal that was defeated in the Lok Sabha on Friday.
Appealing to women of Telangana to remember what he termed a “betrayal” by the Congress, he asserted that the BJP would continue to fight for women’s empowerment despite attempts to suppress their movement.
Speaking to the media at his residence, where he was under house arrest, Mr. Rao described the Congress’s vote against the Bill as reflecting a deep-seated bias against women entering politics.
He dismissed the Congress’s arguments on delimitation as mere ploys to derail the core issue of 33% reservation for women. “For the last 30 years, the Congress has delayed this justice. They fear that if ordinary women rise, their family-centric politics will collapse,” Mr. Rao said.
Earlier, tension prevailed in the city for some time as the police placed Mr. Rao under house arrest, preventing him from proceeding to Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy’s residence to protest against the Congress’s opposition to the women’s reservation Bill. Heavy police deployment was seen at his residence early in the morning, restricting his movement.
