A mob attacked an office of the Assam Forest Department in Chirang district on Friday (April 17, 2026), fuelling tension along the India-Bhutan border.

The mob, protesting the detention of some locals who had allegedly encroached upon forest land, vandalised the Runikhata Forest Range office and residential quarters, torched more than half-a-dozen government vehicles on its premises, and took away some weapons.

The place is about 210 km northwest of Guwahati.

Officials in the north-western Assam district said the police used force to control the situation and recovered the weapons, but the violence continued. More than 30 people, mostly police personnel, were injured.

At least four protesters were detained.
