AMMAN: The Jordanian foreign minister, Ayman Safadi, on Friday called for coordinated regional and international efforts to help sustain the ceasefire between Israel and Lebanon, and support Beirut in its efforts to extend state authority throughout its territory.
Speaking on the sidelines of the Antalya Diplomacy Forum in Turkiye, Safadi said it was essential that control of weapons is exclusively in the hands of the Lebanese state, as part of efforts to reinforce stability in the country.
He also praised US President Donald Trump for his role in securing the 10-day ceasefire agreement in Lebanon, which came into effect at midnight on Thursday, describing the truce as a key step toward an easing of regional tensions, the Jordan News Agency reported.
During meetings with regional and international counterparts, Safadi urged the global community to adopt firm positions to help safeguard regional stability, and warned against what he described as the escalating actions of Israel in Lebanon, Syria and the occupied West Bank.
He cited in particular the continuing expansion of Israeli settlements, the annexation of Palestinian land, and attempts to alter the historical and legal status quo of Jerusalem and the city’s Islamic and Christian holy sites, describing such moves as violations of international law and a threat to the prospects for peace.
