April 17 (UPI) -- Faith Torrez overcame an injury-plagued season to win the NCAA gymnastics all-around title, shocking the Fort Worth, Texas, crowd, including herself.
The Oklahoma Sooners senior, who placed third in the all-around standings last year, posted a 9.9375 on the vault, 9.9500 on uneven bars, 9.9500 on balance beam and 9.9500 in the floor exercise to total 39.7875 at Dickies Arena.
LSU's Kailin Chio (39.6125) placed second in the all-around standings. Florida's eMjae Frazier (39.5625) placed third.
"If you would have asked me 2 1/2 weeks ago, I had no intention of doing the all-around this meet," Torrez said on the ESPN broadcast. "But it was great. It kinda just happened the way it happened. And it happened perfectly."
Olympic gold medalist Jordan Chiles won the floor exercise national crown with a score of 9.9750, just ahead of Chio's 9.9625. Stanford's Ana Barbosu, who was awarded with a bronze medal initially won by Chiles at the 2024 Summer Olympics before the American's score was overturned, tied for 13th Thursday in Fort Worth.
