Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi on Friday (April 17, 2026) triggered laughter in the House with a tongue-in-cheek remark that both he and Prime Minister Narendra Modi did not have the “wife issue”, as he spoke on the influence of women in public life.
Taking part in a debate on Bills related to the women’s reservation law and delimitation, Mr. Gandhi said members across the House had been shaped by women — mothers, sisters and wives.

“All of us in this room have been influenced, taught, and have learnt a lot from women in our lives – from mothers, sisters, wives,” Mr Gandhi said, adding, “Of course, the Prime Minister and myself don’t have the wife issue, so we don’t get that input, but we have our mothers and sisters.”
He made the remark while referring to Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju’s light-hearted remark that he (Mr. Rijiju) got a scolding at home as he did not compose a poem for his wife like Union Law Minister Arjun Ram Meghwal did.
