The Uttarakhand government on Thursday (April 16, 2026) ordered a probe after taking cognisance of a video circulating on social media that allegedly shows children from other States being brought to madrasas in parts of Uttarakhand.

Parag Madhukar Dhakate, Special Secretary in the Minority Welfare Department, has directed district magistrates of Dehradun, Haridwar, Udham Singh Nagar and Nainital to undertake extensive verification drives across all madrasas in their jurisdictions.

According to the order, the inquiry will examine the origin of the children, whether consent was obtained from their guardians, and the individuals or organisations responsible for bringing them to the institutions.

“A comprehensive inspection and verification campaign will be conducted across all madrasas in the State, and a detailed report will be submitted to the authorities,” the directive said.

Officials said there are currently 452 registered madrassas operating in Uttarakhand.
