Farmers under the banner of the Desiya Karshaka Samajam have urged the Civil Supplies Corporation (Supplyco) to procure the entire paddy yield produced in the State.

According to farmers, Supplyco has been refusing to procure paddy beyond 2,500 kg per acre, even though yields in several fields have gone up to 3,000 kg per acre. Farmers said the restriction was causing hardships to them.

Desiya Karshaka Samajam president Muthalamthodu Mani said farmers were being asked to produce a special certificate from the agricultural officer for procurement above the 2,500 kg limit, adding to their woes.

He said the policy was creating confusion and delay at the time of harvest, and demanded that Supplyco streamline procurement without placing additional hurdles on farmers.

Mr. Mani pointed out that in some regions, Supplyco was procuring up to 3,000 kg of paddy per acre. “Such discrepancies should be avoided,” he said, demanding uniformity in the procurement process.
