The summer promises to be "intense" for travelers in Paris and the Paris region, with "unprecedented large-scale works" set to "modernize, upgrade and expand" the metro, RER commuter train, and tramway lines, announced the Paris region transport authority on Wednesday, April 15.
While disrupting travel in the short term, the works will enable connections to the future Grand Paris Express network currently under construction (lines 15, 16, 17, and 18), Ile-de-France Mobilités (IDFM) explained in a press release. The authority said that the total budget for the works amounts to "nearly €4 billion" through 2026.
Within central Paris, modernization works on metro infrastructure will affect the popular line 4 (Bagneux – Porte-de-Clignancourt), which will close for 19 days between Les Halles and Montparnasse, from July 6 to July 24. Lines 8 and 12, which are preparing to introduce new MF19 trains, will also be impacted. Line 8 will be closed from Balard to Concorde from August 20 to August 27, and trains will not stop at Place de la République station from July 22 until April 2027.
Line 12 will also be closed from Jules Joffrin to Concorde from July 16 to July 26. The heavily used line 13 will see several closures as preparations are made to automate the line, including a full suspension of service between Saint-Denis-Université and La-Fourche for 18 days, from July 31 to August 17.
