Morocco is home to around 2,500 Jews - the largest remaining Jewish community in North Africa - and has long recognised and promoted its Jewish identity.
The kingdom officially enshrined its “Hebraic tributary” in its 2011 constitution to legally protect and preserve Jewish presence in Moroccan society.
Meanwhile, a wide variety of projects aimed at safeguarding Jewish history and culture are being implemented in the country. They include the restoration of crumbling heritage sites, workshops aimed at fostering religious tolerance and understanding, or programmes in rural communities for beneficiaries of all faiths across a variety of sectors.
However, beyond these admirable projects lie programmes with a more hidden political agenda, led by foreign organisations known for actively promoting Zionism and supporting Israel, including through funding to its army in occupied Palestine.
The Jewish organisations involved in such activities have a key role in shaping future narratives on Israel and Palestine. They regularly parade young Moroccans around Israel. When taken to Holocaust sites in Europe, the organisations make sure to take pictures of the youth clutching the Moroccan flag in one hand and the Israeli flag in the other.
