Discomfort among Macron's coalition

Caroline Yadan, an MP who sits with President Emmanuel Macron's coalition, is set to defend her bill "combating renewed forms of antisemitism" in the Assemblée Nationale on Thursday and Friday. The lawmaker, who represents French citizens living abroad, notably those in Israel, intends the legislation as a response to "the surge in antisemitic acts" in France and their "renewed forms" since the October 7, 2023, attack by Hamar.

The bill would broaden the offense of "glorifying terrorism" and create a new offense of "inciting the destruction of a state." It was inspired by the 2016 definition of antisemitism by the International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance.

It is backed by the government and MPs from center-right Horizons, right-wing Les Républicains, and far-right Rassemblement National. But it has caused unease among some of Macron's centrist lawmakers. Neither the Macron-allied MoDem party nor the Socialists will support it.
