A woman was fatally shot by officers outside a Walmart after shoplifting a knife and slashing a 3-year-old boy, who had been shopping with his guardian, police in Omaha, Nebraska, said.
The incident unfolded the morning of April 14, when police responded to emergency calls at about 9:13 a.m., with one caller reporting a woman armed with a "large kitchen knife" who was with a young child. When they arrived, officers found the woman, identified as 31-year-old Noemi Guzman, standing near the parking lot next to the child, who was in a shopping cart, the Omaha Police Department said.
Guzman was making threats with the knife, police said in a statement. Officers ordered her to drop it.
"She refused to drop the weapon and cut the boy," police said.
Two officers fired at her, striking her. She was pronounced dead at the scene despite life-saving measures, police said.
