United States Vice President JD Vance has told Pope Leo XIV that God was on the side of the Americans when they liberated France from the Nazis after the American pontiff repeatedly said God does not take sides in war and was not with the USA in its war alongside Israel with Iran.
Vance, a Catholic convert, invoked World War II to defend the American bombing of Iran from the Pope's criticism, the New York Times reports.
Vance explained that the Pope was wrong to say that Christ's disciples are "never on the side of those who once wielded the sword and now drop bombs.
"Was God on the side of the Americans when they liberated France from the Nazis? I certainly believe the answer is yes," Vance said.
