Key BackgroundThe initial round of allegations against Swalwell surfaced last week in multiple media reports, with a former staffer accusing him of sexual assault following a night of drinks at a gala they attended in 2024, claiming she was too intoxicated to consent. A story from CNN also included accounts from other women who claimed Swalwell sent them unsolicited nude images and explicit messages. Swalwell, who was one of the leading candidates in California’s gubernatorial race, dropped his bid for governor by Sunday. He faced calls to resign or be removed from Congress, which he caved to on Monday, when he announced he would be stepping down from his seat. He officially resigned Tuesday, the same day Rep. Tony Gonzales, R-Texas, resigned following a separate set of sexual misconduct allegations. Swalwell has denied the claims against him, as has Gonzales, who was specifically accused of having an affair with a former staffer, who Regina Ann Santos-Aviles, who died by suicide last year.Further ReadingTony Gonzales And Eric Swalwell Will Resign From Congress Amid Sexual Misconduct Allegations (Forbes)Eric Swalwell Under Investigation After Sexual Assault Allegation Against Him (Forbes)
