Dem Threatens To Hold Pam Bondi In Contempt After Deposition No-ShowRep. Robert Garcia (D-Calif.), the top Democrat on the House Oversight Committee, threatened potential contempt proceedings against former Attorney General Pam Bondi after she failed to show up for a scheduled deposition on the government's files on Jeffrey Epstein."Pam Bondi is evading a lawful congressional subpoena by failing to appear before the Oversight Committee for a deposition about the Epstein files and the White House cover-up," Garcia said in a statement. "She must appear before the Committee, and if she continues to ignore the law, Oversight Democrats will move forward with contempt proceedings immediately."Bondi wasn't expected to appear after the Justice Department claimed last week she didn't have to comply with the panel's subpoena anymore since she is no longer attorney general.Except that's not how subpoenas work. And Bondi was subpoenaed by name, not by title. It's not clear what happens next. A spokesperson for Rep. James Comer (R-Ky.), the committee chairman, said last week that Republicans would be in touch with Bondi's personal attorney to try to reschedule her deposition. There is bipartisan support on the panel for making Bondi give a deposition. It's possible Garcia could use the next full committee hearing to try to force a vote on contempt proceedings, or on some other action aimed at making Bondi come in.A committee spokeswoman later told HuffPost she had no "immediate update" on Comey's talks with Bondi's attorney. She accused Garcia of displaying "purely performative" anger over Bondi's no-show, citing former President Bill Clinton and former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton previously defying subpoenas to give depositions on Epstein."Ranking Member Garcia is a hypocrite," the spokeswoman said. "The Clintons defied lawful subpoenas for seven months, and he said nothing. When the Oversight Committee moved to hold them in contempt of Congress, he voted no."The Clintons did initially ignore subpoenas in January, saying they'd already shared with the committee what "little information" they had. But they eventually came in and gave depositions in February. After that, Democrats warned the GOP they had opened the door to Democrats subpoenaing President Donald Trump to give a deposition about Epstein when they retake control of the House.See All UpdatesClose
