In Mumbai, where local trains are considered a lifeline, the first new non-air-conditioned suburban train, equipped with “Automatic Door Closure,” has arrived at Kurla car shed. This close-door designed local train marks an upgrade in the city’s railway plan.

“The rake is introduced as a step to enhance passenger safety, convenience, and modernisation of Mumbai’s suburban services,” a Central Railway spokesperson said.

The Integral Coach Factory (ICF) in Chennai developed the 12-car train featuring compartments, large windows, reasonable leg space, and space to luggage.

In November 2025, a tragic incident in Mumbra claimed five lives when passengers fell from a moving train. Following the incident, discussions around introducing closed-door local trains gained momentum. Six months later, the Central Railway has designed a closed-door train, which is expected to be introduced after the completion of final trials.
